Back when I used to work as a waiter I had a similar experience. (And you will see how old this story is in a moment.) I had this one couple that were regulars; nice older couple and always friendly, but never tipped. That was just the way the husband was.

Once the wife felt bad that they were taking up a bunch of my time, and when her husband was turned to talk to the table next to them, she pulled me aside to give me a small tip. Her words were like "I'd like to give you a couple of dollars for your trouble." The thing was, she thought she was giving me two $1 bills, but it was actually two $20s. She was hard of hearing as well as her vision problems, so by the time I made sure she knew it was $40 she was trying to give instead of $2, her husband heard what was going on. He actually reached into his pocket and gave me $4 instead of the $2 I was supposed to get- the extra was because I was so honest.

The funny part of the story was the wife said "see- bing honest does pay in the long run", but then the husband said "no it doesn't- if he had kept his mouth shut he would have had $40 instead of $4."
