You could do some research about what kind of cars fit your needs, then you could go testdrive until you find one you like, then you can put in an offer on it and negotiate with the saleman. Go in with a set max you can afford, and don't go over that amount. Also, this way you don't get a crappy car, and you hopefully get one that "feels right" rather than one with the "best features."

That's the way I do it.
