Ie. This is what you eat, this is how much it costs. The state will pay for the approved food, but if you deviate you're on your own.

Totally agree. I would be interested in how much genetics play a role. No doubt it plays a role, but I doubt there is gene that makes someone over 300 pounds. It might make them susceptible to it, but all the blame can't be placed on it.
It's tough to tell from the article as the information is pretty limited, but I wouldn't be surprised if the extent of them try to eat healthy was walking down the produce isle and nothing more. TLC has shows where people are losing literally 700 hundred pounds, they have had to take drastic measures sure, but you have do something. Complaining doesn't burn calories.
