at least with holidays like christmas and american thanksgiving, there's still some people that know and try to continue the initial meaning of the holiday. unfortunately with st patties day, i have never met someone who knows a thing about the real st. patrick or really knows anything about the holiday except they are supposed to get drunk and wear green.
Sort of like how everyone seems to become Christian on Christmas? Now-a-days all people do is get drunk and give gifts. Why do we need a holiday to do that? Christmas is pure amateur hour!
