The reviews aren't saying it's that great.

"But Paramount has a bigger problem this morning: very mixed to poor reviews, and no pre-sold-out shows in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles, according to Moviefone.com."
""Unfortunately, 'War of the Worlds' is very disappointing and provides only minimal entertainment. The worst of the U.S. summer blockbusters thus far.""

""War of the Worlds" is a big, clunky movie containing some sensational sights but lacking the zest and joyous energy we expect from Steven Spielberg. It proceeds with the lead-footed deliberation of its 1950s predecessors to give us an alien invasion that is malevolent, destructive and, from the alien point of view, pointless."

The ending is not as good as the original or as the novel. Given a million years to plan, according to the movie, you'd think the Martians would've prepared for this.
