I read that article this morning and loved one of the comments left.

You think speed camera's are right and will pay for them selves, then lets try something else first. Lets put the camera's up and one month we target speeders and the next we target the people who merge onto deerfoot at 60 km/h when everybody is doing 100 km/h. Also should catch those doing 100 km/h or less in the left lane and not allowing anybody to pass. I bet with those two the first month would make more money then the speed camera's. Honestly speed is not the killer, if people would learn to merge with traffic and be curtious with the left lane we would have less accidents and safer roads.
Would the object of these cameras be to catch speeders and make money, or to reduce the amount of accidents and make the road safer? If it is to make money, then great - that's all it will do. If they want to reduce the amount of accidents, then I suggest the cameras be used in the fashion as quoted above.

How about CPS patrol Deerfoot and spot the scared sheetless drivers that are merging incorrectly, holding up all traffic by driving too slow, (in whatever lane), panic braking for no reason....how about that?

Sure, some guy driving 150-160 at 3am and plowing into the median doesn't meet the above criteria, but you could almost guarantee that the largest amount of accidents on Deerfoot are NOT caused by speeders.
