I agree on the lessons part, but only to a point. I learned to curl in Jr High on a school trip. Had I not had professional instruction I think it would have taken me a longer to get the hang of it and I never would have really understood the theory and proper technique behind it. That said, if you get an experienced guy to come out and show you the ropes for an hour, that is all it takes.
My dad always used to say that learning to curl is almost all about spending time on the sheet throwing rocks.
