No, see that was the problem. V was no longer a "do as you please" (as you put it) anarchist. He became a freedom fighter, he wasn't fighting because he wanted too, because he thought his way was better. He was fighting because there was oppression. It changes the character entirely, which in turn changed the plot entirely.

It was no longer two, equally bad forces, who didn't have the moderation to do what was needed, fighting each other. It became a story of Good Vs. Evil, which was not what the book was supposed to be.
