Yeah, it's pretty simple to deposit really. On pokerstars I use the "echecks" option which pretty much links right up to your bank account for deposits and withdrawals. There are a few other options as well.
I believe the minimum deposit is about $25.00 US, so like $33 CDN.
Tournaments start as low as $0.10.
I just really enjoy the software and their tournament structure. Their support is always top-notch also, and their reward program is the best IMO. Been playing there for over 4 years now and have loved my experience.
If you play poker more for the social aspect of it though (which it sounds like is true in your case), you probably wouldn't enjoy it. I like it because I'm usually sittin around at home on weeknights anyway so it gives me a fun, cheap (free if i'm winning) way to kill time while I browse CP, watch hockey, and do laundry.
