The only problem I have with the decision is that 9 year olds typically don't make their own decisions. It's hard to hold her accountable. The doctors, sure.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with their right to excommunicate people from their religion. To be honest I don't think anyone cares. The outrage is coming against an organization that tells everyone that they are the moral high ground and yet are completely hypocritical when it comes to morals. I don't remember them excommunicating all the child abusing priests. Sure they have the right to excommunicate anyone they want to, but if they are going to keep telling everyone that they are the moral authority then deserve all the flack they get.
