He can take his pills inside prison and even if it was low security prison, it could be a good way to transition these people into society. Give them time to get a routine to take their medications.
What you are asking for is a change to the laws we have now. You want to take a person who was found not criminaly responsible for a crime and make him responsible so you can have him spend more time in prison. Either he spends time in a hospital or in a prison. I'm not sure you could have it both ways.

As for transistion into society i would think they would be getting day passes from the hospital as a form of reintegration into society plus maybe some help from a social worker. Or maybe even a halfway house that is similar to a low secuirty prison.

Because like you friend, if they go off them, then what? Bad things happen, they hurt themselves, they hurt other people.

It is truly sad that they have this disease, but it should be their responsibility to accept help. If not then they should be found responsible for their actions.
I would suspect that if Li was ever released there would be some strict conditions attached to it. He'd probably have to see a psychiatrist on a regular basis and be tested to see if he's taking his meds. Should he breach any of those conditions i suspect he'd be back in the hospital.
