I would also do what you need to do to make the day special. Give the cat his favourite food, make sure you have the time to spend with him.

Have a friend drive you to the vet so you can hold him as long as you can.

The other thing I did after losing a pet was I had him cremated. This was about 8 years ago but it was only about $80. The place was done up like a small funeral home, and the staff was very understanding. It really helped me with the closure I needed.
