Maybe its cause I have had so many close friends who have worked or still do in the industry. Tipping is automatic for me at 15% and I go up to 20-30% for really good service.
Its just people in that industry have bad days, and most of the places I go to regularly so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they have a bad night.
If I find repeated bad service from a particular server/bartender I'll talk to the manager.
But in my experience if I get mediocre service one night, the next time that same server takes care of me they redeem themselves.
I can't recall a time where I've had brutal service, so I don't know exactly what I'd do in such a situation, probably talk to the manager on the spot.
