My point is, in a case with bodily injury (broken bones) the police's main objective was to see that the right person took responsibility. The fact that your buddy did the right thing the next day shouldn't affect him any more than a standard accident.
So in other words, if you ever hit something or someone, go home, sleep off the booze and then call the cops the next day and say "gee, I'm not entirely sure, but it appears that I may have been in an accident last night. There's this scratch on my car..."
