I'm no fan of the Stampede, but I do think it's a positive for the city, both in terms of perceptions of the city as well as civic spirit and pride. But even with it, we're a long long way from being a world-class city. It is a real uphill struggle for a landlocked, non-capital, relatively recently-formed city to become world class, and Calgary holds up pretty well against other cities in a similar situation (in fact, I'd say we could be the best 100-year-old, landlocked non-capital city in the world).
