After playing it a bit more and adjusting my game I am taking far less penalties...but still taking some penalties that IMO are pretty iffy. It's almost like they turned up the penalties from a 4 to a 10, where 8 probably would have been about right. Moving the penalty slider down doesn't seem to have a whole lot of effect either.

I'd like to use hooking a bit more now - but it turns into a fight way too often, I guess I'll have to turn fighting way down or off.

On the whole, the game plays a quite a bit differently now.
This is something I've been lobbying for years. I'd love to see two degrees of hits. One standard light hit that just delivers a regular check that serves little purpose other than knocking a puck loose, and a secondary hit that has more of an oomph to it and can put someone on their ass. Kind of like how baseball games have a "throw" button as well as a "hard throw" button. The regular throw is pretty much automatic while the hard throw is faster but more risky. I don't like how you have no control over whether your player is going to dish out a standard shoulder-to-shoulder hit or a devastating cross-check to the throat.

I say modifier buttons are the answer! I'd like a standard check on the right stick and a big hit on the right stick + R2 (or RT).

Quick side note, I'm finding one-timers much easier so far under the new patch. They still aren't terribly accurate, but I at least don't miss 3/4 of them anymore.
