Looked like a nice set-piece to stick in the movie. Letterman baits him time after time and he just rolls right along. That's hardly a meltdown. Either a drug induced semi-comatose performance or just some more brillant acting and I think the latter more likely.

The part that convinced me of your line of thinking is when Letterman asked him about the film being based on the book.... and he said he didn't know.
Of course he knows. I've followed his career some (not quite since Space Camp

) and know from watching other interviews that he researches like a madman for roles. He's read the book, probably multiple times.
I eagerly await the day when Affleck (who is Joaquin's brother-in-law by the way) releases his film.
Besides, did anyone really think that his rapping in that other thread wasn't a total put on?
