I think it also depends on what you're looking for. I used to lift a ton of heavy weights, and was pretty strong. When I lifted weights, I found that it hindered me in hockey, biking etc. I had no endurance.
with p90x, I can't lift nearly as much, but I'm faster on my skates and my bike and my endurance is 100x better. It's just different training. Essentially I'm alot more fit with p90x. Also, when weight training, I always found it tough to get rid of that last bit of fat, but now I'm ripped. With p90x you're going hard for 1-1.5 hrs everyday, no resting. Your heart rate can get up there.
You could make a similar program up for free, except for some of the stuff like plyo, and the kenpo, and the yogo both of which I quite like, especially the plyo. I enjoy the variety, I don't get bored like I did in the gym, but I do find now that I am craving some weights again for some exercises like bench press.
