I think the love em, or hate em thing started in the mid to late 90s when Radiohead got a lot of airplay on stations like CJAY. The type of listener who likes to tune into CJAY and hear songs like "Panama" would tune in and hear "Paranoid Android" and would promptly say 'No Thanks' and switch to Rock 107. After constantly having to switch away from their favorite radio station, they developed a hate on for Radiohead. Conversely those who were fans of Radiohead, loved them even more for their ability to turn off these types of people.
Personally I really don't like Radiohead. I think their music is summed up by the expression that complexity doesn't always sound better.
