I have one of those. They remove a thin layer of the disc which gets rid of the scratch as long as it's not deep. It leaves ugly marks on the disc but according to the manual the way the laser reads the disc it doesn't pick up the marks. It's worked for most of the discs I've used it on but sometimes you need to do it twice for it to completely remove the scratch.
