It's always a good idea to go through insurance. The other party can always opt to pay for the damages afterwards rather than the insurance company and they'll arrange everything for you and should guarantee any repairs. Whereas if you just trust the other person you take on a lot of risk that you shouldn't have to. Still it always sucks to have your vehicle damaged, especially when it's not your fault.
