Yes, a virus, bug or malware app was probably the cause. Glad to hear that avast! helped fix things.

Actually, yes, there could be good reason(s) to not run both at the same time. The one obvious reason is that they will consume more system resources than necessary, likely slowing the rest of the computer down noticeably.

Another reason is that AVG and avast! could cross each other up if both real-time protection modes are running. This could potentially cause false positives on either side, system slowing or complete locking up, or in extreme cases, malware infiltration due to decreased protection caused by simultaneous incompatible scripts.


EDIT: If you want to, you could leave both installed and only have one of the two as your real-time agent. Personally, I'd just choose whichever one I prefer and be done with it, but some people like to have that fail-safe back-up application always available should the other one stop working. Either way, I recommend against running them both at the same time.
