I witnessed quite possibly the most unlikely to succeed pickup attempt ever this morning.
I'm at Second Cup looking at the menu board to try and figure out what to get. As I'm getting in line there's a woman standing off to the side of the line. As soon as I get into line, she joins the line behind me. Since I thought she might have been confused where the line was, I offer to let her go in front of me in the line but she refuses. I thought it was weird at the time but soon the reason for her actions would become clear.
I'm waiting and in front of me is a short fat middle aged guy with greasy black hair. I start to take a little more notice of him when he asks the woman behind the counter, in a high pitched voice, how much he can get and proceeds to hand her a couple handfuls of what looks to be mostly nickels. Now I understand why the woman joined the line right after me because at this point I'm trying to figure out if he's either a hobo or an escaped mental patient. So the woman at the counter hands him a cup of coffee and tells him that's how much he gets.
This is when the guy makes his move. There's a different woman working the cash. She's young and impossibly cute. Possibly the cutest I've seen in Edmonton. He starts asking her how her day is and trying to make small talk with her in his high pitched voice. Keep in mind he's already handed over his sock full of nickels so there's no reason for him to deal with the cashier. He's obviously trying to engage her in a conversation and she's clearly uncomfortable but doesn't want to make it to obvious to him for fear that he might pull out a shiv or something. He eventually leaves the counter area and I'm laughing at this freak. I place my order and consider making a joke to the cashier about him but couldn't decide what to say. I just shook my head and snickering while she seems thankful that he's gone.
While waiting for my drink, I hear the same screechy voice say, "don't back up..." as he squeezes past me and the post four feet away. Then he tries to restart the conversation with the cashier but she's busy and acts like she doesn't hear him. I guess he took the hint or something because he waddles out of the shop.
