Preterm births in Canada have jumped a staggering 25 per cent over the last 10 or 12 years, new data released Thursday by the Canadian Institute for Health Information show.

Even people in the business of delivering babies were surprised by the magnitude of the increase, which is due to a variety of factors tied into the fact that women are waiting until they are older to have children.

Preterm and small for gestational age babies add considerably to health-care costs, needing lots of additional and high tech care. For instance, a baby born at 750 grams – about 1.5 pounds – will need, on average, $120,000 worth of health care before he or she goes home from hospital, the report said.


A normal weight, full term baby costs the system under $1,000, Christilaw said.
