The US really is like 50 little countries, as well as some territories, of varying similarity, just like Canada is really 10 little countries, as well as 3 territories, (despite what some ardent nationalists and Trudeau-nauts might say) and you really can't group them all together.

Well, I'm not really sure about the "trouble states." I've heard the region described as "duality of the Southern thing." Alabama had George Wallace throughout the civil rights strife, but you also had the recording meccas of Mussels Shoals and others where blacks worked alongside whites producing some of the century's greatest music.
