Incidentally, this is thematically relevant to the film and in fact closely related to a very poignant statement the story makes about the idea of the 'American dream'.
I was NOT an ardent supporter of Eastwood's last both-sides-of-the-camera effort in Million Dollar Baby, but I really like what he achieves here. It isn't perfect and does resort to some rather lame cliches at times, but there are some good laughs mixed in with the drama, and some speculate it could be Clint's swan song (though this is nothing new); given the Academy's history of sentimental and political nominations I am definitely surprised to see Gran Torino shut out.
One thing I don't think I'll ever understand is the double-nominee (ie., categories where a movie gets more than one short-lister). Certainly these films are strong and doubtless (no pun intended) the recognition is warranted, but with a) so many other good movies available to honor and b) the wide swath of interests that are invested in getting recognized via this avenue, ignoring solid work while focusing heavily on multiple facets of one work whose comparable value is debateable at best (given ranging opinions at least) strikes me as very odd.
