Are you talking about Halo on the Xbox or PC?

Halo (the Xbox version, at least) did a few things very, very well.

1. Co-op gameplay. I can't express how fun it is to play through the game with a buddy. It irritates me to no end that more games don't have a co-op mode.

2. Weapon switching. I liked that you could only carry two weapons at any one time, and I *really* liked that you could throw a grenade or perform a melee attack without having to switch your weapon.

3. Intelligent enemies. Play the game on Normal then try it agian on Legendary. The aliens are noticably smarter, using cover and teamwork much better.

Also keep in mind that the game is nearly four years old now, so other games have borrowed some of the things that made Halo great.

And you can't really be serious about Quake being better, can you? As a multiplayer deathmatch game, sure, but the singleplayer (and especially co-op) of Halo is infinitely better than Quake. IMO it rivals Half-Life in that respect.
