A spokesman for the Securities and Exchange Commission, John J. Nester, declined to comment on Apple’s situation. But he said that in general, while there were no specific requirements for companies to disclose the health of their officers or directors,
companies needed to assess whether health problems could have a material impact on results.
i think this is the key. Jobs is Apple in a lot of people's eyes. If he died tomorrow what would the stock do? Tank. Therefore, his illnes is/would have a material impact.
