I'm no HDR expert and you've probably figured it out by now but in Photomatix one of the settings you have is "light blending". You can select between 5 different radial buttons from very low to very high. I find that once you have the colour balance the way you want the light blending does a good job of adjusting the image from fake to real. Low light blending gives the image extreme contrast and produces "faker" looking images, much like Jayems HDR photos in this thread. High light blending does just that and blends the light a little to reduce the direct contrast and produces more more "real" looking images, like kobafet's.
Someone with a little more knowledge can probably step in and tell you more but I've found this setting to be extremely useful when it comes to tweaking how fake your images look.
