Epic set up is right. Your friendly everyday canadian... He had everything stolen, too. Passport, wallet, laptop, cell phone, ipod, bag of weed... I had to lend him money to take the metro to the canadian embassy to get a new passport. Then it took a whole bunch of time to get a replacement visa (cc)... It was pretty harsh. Dude was a totally nice guy, too. It didn't break his spirit though. He hung around for a couple more weeks while he got his shiz back together and then carried on to Greece and Egypt and eventually coming back and staying in Rome for another couple of weeks.
Oh, and IIRC, the cellphone was a recent replacement as he had gotten his other one pickpocketed. I warned him, though. I warned all my guests. Some people learn it the hard way. He wasn't the only guest I had to give directions to an embassy. Rome. The pickpocketing capital of the freakin world. They'll go for your passport. Beware.
