I don't know much about Macs except I hate them, but for what its worth, these are the FREEware programs I install whenever I fix or build a system:

AVG Free
Spybot
OpenOffice
VLC Media Player
Burnaware
Adobe Reader
Adobe Flash
Mozilla FireFox
Audacity (with an mp3 codec like LAME).
