Joseph Nieuwendyk (born September 10, 1966 in Oshawa, Ontario) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player in the National Hockey League. He won the Stanley Cup three times, in three different decades, on three different teams, and is considered to be one of the best face-off men in NHL history. He announced his retirement from professional hockey due to chronic back problems on December 6, 2006, effective immediately. He was hired by the Florida Panthers as a special consultant to the general manager, and is currently special assistant to the general manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Those first two seasons as a Flame where he nearly tied Mike Bossy's rookie goal scoring record, then matched his mark of 51 goals as a sophomore, while on the way to winning a Stanley Cup were enough to place him in my list of all-time great Flame players. If he hadn't blown his knee out in the World Championships a couple of years later, after which his numbers dropped drastically, who knows how high his goal totals could have been?
