You guys are all over the board, and don't really know what yams are.
So if you are in Safeway, both the orange and the light yellow colored ones are Sweet Potatoes. Sweet potatoes are just like potatoes, but a little higher in nutrients.
Yams on the other hand, I doubt Safeway has ever carried. They are a tuber that grows from a vine and is almost exclusivly cultivated in Africa. This is the vegetable that is insanely high in nutritional value. Problem is, its hard to find in North America; generally only carried in african specialty shops.

While sweet potatoes are closer to regular potatoes in appearance, they are far more similiar to yams in nutritional value. They're actually even more nutritious them yams if you go by the chart here:
