^^ Well, let's start off with the fact that out of the 4 major chains in Calgary, 2 of them don't have deposit on their carts.

Then look at the fact that he lives in another country, and think that there may be other methods in place.

In warmer climates (like California) the carts have magnetic locks on them. Once they hit a point in the parking lot perimiter, the wheels lock. Last year in Phoenix at 2:00am at a drug store I saw kids playing "Jackass"- putting their buddy in the cart, going as fact as they can, then when the locks hit the cart and the kid would go flying.
