What make and model of Blu Ray player do you have? If it has 5.1 or 7.1 analog outputs, then your best bet would be to connect to the 6/8 inputs on your amp. (With the HDMI video going directly to your TV as you suggest.) This will give you nearly equivelant (TrueHD) audio to using audio over HDMI. FYI, the optical cable is not capable of carrying TrueHD. (You may get 5.1 audio but it is of a lower quality.) I learned this the hard way.
