I thought Ken would be mopping the floor with them too though. I bet the other guys think about all the millions they could have made if it wasn't for the 5 time champion rule that they had and Ken didn't.

It seems like the competition is automatically better off given they've had a whole tournament of experience before this 'match'. I heard Ken say once that the timing of pressing the button is everything; you can't just press it hard and fast, you have to time when Trebeck finishes talking. The person who presses first doesn't get the question, the person who presses first
after the judges release the buttons goes first.
So, in this case, all three guys have good button-pressing experience, as opposed to the losers Ken was mopping up, who were just getting the button-hang of things right around when they lose.
A theory, anyway.
