I would go with the PS3. I have one, I use it as a media hub; Blu Ray, DVD, and streaming video and audio from every computer in the house.
Blu Ray live is kinda interesting, you can download additional special features and discs. And they recently unveiled new 400 GB Blu Ray discs, which will be compatible with the PS3 (
http://www.pcworld.com/article/15509...evelopers.html), and new 1 TB discs for 2013. I'm not sure if some of the cheaper models would be compatible; I don't see why not, but why risk it when you can just get the PS3?
The noise is not an issue....incredibly quiet machine. I have the 40 GB model and don't hear any noise whatsoever. You can use the Sony Blu Ray Remote for the PS3, as a IR Remote won't work right out of the box. You can however, buy an IR adaptor and recieve full functionality of a Harmony Remote; some IR adaptors may not be able to handle on and off, but I just googled one and this site here (
http://www.ps3toothfairy.com/faq.php) appears to be able to handle the function.
