Agreed.
Worst possible job of covering these games as was humanly possible.
here is a letter sent to the editor of the NY Post as published in todays edition...pretty much covers what most people are feeling down here.
August 22, 2004 -- * As usual, watching the Olympics is almost not worth the aggravation. With NBC playing unconscionable ratings stunts, I'm about ready to boycott the Games completely.
Watching Paul Hamm go for the gold should have been easy. Guess again! First, you have to avoid hearing the results, before the television broadcast: No television, no radio, no Internet. Second, you need to stay awake until midnight. Having seen Hamm muff his vault, and apparently ruin his chances, I (and I'm guessing many others), dragged myself to bed at 11:10 p.m. with two rotations to go — and missed the comeback! NBC knew how this was going to end, and they CHOSE to air the comeback well after the end of prime-time.
As far as I'm concerned, NBC screwed the working man Wednesday night. We missed history being made because they greedily tried to squeeze another 60 minutes out of us. No wonder ratings are down and no one goes to the Olympics anymore.
