It wasn't a cameo. Sam Braun is one of the side characters of the show and has been involved in a number of episodes.

His character is based largely on the real life casino magnate Benny Binion (now dead). There was actually an episode of CSI based entirely on the murder and trial of Benny Binion's son Ted. The trial was also documented in James McManus' "Positively Fifth Street".

Great episode btw. Really enjoyed it.
