as for horror stories of girls and boys and the people we date that do or do not like hockey, i once dated a girl for 2 years, and it ended during the 2004 run. she used to go away on business for 3 weeks at a time, never further than 2 hours from home, and i would often visit her on my days off and hang out in the hotel and do nothing...but throughout the cup run, my wanting to watch the flames had become somewhat of a sore point, so i capitulated when i could. on days off, i would drive to her and miss some of it if i had to and watch, but on days i worked i'd meet my friends at our favourite bar in oakville, ontario, and deck out in flames gear with my inflatable stanley cup..

on the day of game seven of the finals, i was off, but driving to her would've meant missing part of the game and i was not going to do that. i told her i would come the next day, but since she was only less than an hour away, i asked if she'd be willing to join my friends and i at the bar to watch the game because it would be nice to have the supposed "special someone" to share in the biggest moment of my life as a sports fan... well come she did, and made a complete idiot of herself in front of my friends and some other mutual friends we hadn't seen in a couple years. she fought with me throughout much of the first period because i didn't come to see her, at which point i told her why i didn't come and see her and that she should be able to understand that the reason why (game 7/flames)...i also told her that if she wanted to talk about it, she would understand enough to wait after the game.

she gave me the ultimatum then and there. either her or the flames (oh the dramatics)! to this day, i say i owe the flames for saving my life from the terrible path it was going down and helping me make the best decision i ever made. i stopped dating crazy girls and when our waitress found out what just happened, she gave me shots many times throughout the evening to celebrate. what a nite. except for when the flames lost and i was left clutching my inflatable stanley cup...
