I actually do that sometimes
If I'm using firefox, the google tab is inside of a gray border which makes it harder to see what I'm typing, if I need to see what I'm typing. Google.com, OTOH, has more of a contrast (black/white) which makes it easier to see. And keep in mind, Google got as popular as it did, because of its simple front-end interface, rather then all the annoying clutter on yahoo or altavista. (well one of the reasons anyways)
Of coarse now that I'm in Chrome, I just type what I'm looking for into the URL and it will find my search results already.
