I don't need to be called selfish and be accused of hoarding money. My house is worth $140,000 (in Ontario, not insane AB prices), I could afford a much bigger house but I choose not to. Is that selfish? I drive a '98 Ford Contour and an '01 Focus Wagon. Again, I could afford much nicer cars, but I choose not to. Again, am I selfish?
You challenge my views by saying if I grew up in certain situations i would be on welfare. Pretty big assumption. How do you know that I didn't grow up in a trailler park? And to answer your question, if I did grow up there surrounded by drugs, I'd be in the same position I am right now. Why? Because I have AMBITION and a DESIRE to make society better. Remember, if you can make broad assumptions, so can I.

What does your choice of house or car have to do with being selfish? That has to do with where you've chosen to spend your money.
Are you selfish? I'd say that suggesting we should cut people off welfare and ship them elsewhere so that you can make some more money is indeed selfish. That's my harsh opinion on that subject. And despite your opinion that "most" people on welfare could be successful, you HAVE to admit that there are people out there who have mental disabilities and emotional problems that prevent them being successful. If you can't admit that then you really are clueless about a whole subset of society.
You have ambition and desire in your current life and that's based on what you were taught, the examples people in your life have set for you, the opportunities available to you. If you grew up in a hopeless situation there's no guarantee you would have the same ambition and desire and to assume you would is folly.
I wasn't assuming that if you grew up in a trailer park you would be on welfare. I was trying to point out that your life could have been much different and that in turn would have affected your emotional stability, your mental stability, your outlook and attitudes on life. Obviously you've missed the point. You seem to believe that you'd be the same person no matter what situation you grew up in. I think that's a ridiculous assumption.
