I envy this year's First year students. When I was first year we learned Pascal in 231, which is akin to learning to fix a typewriter when you are in a computer repair class.
But you are right, leaving CPSC assignments till the last minute is a death wish. Even if you know exactly what to do, a simple bug can eat up hours and hours. I spent 4 hours yesterday morning fixing a problem with my code that took 2 lines to fix.
I learned 2 things in the last couple years.
1. Make friends with people in every class and work together on understanding stuff. Group study sessions for quizzes are the best thing since broadband.
2. Give 4th year students baked goods. Never know when you are going to have to get some advice that they can explain in 2 mins when it would take you 2 hours to figure the same thing out.
