It's not an expectation based out of a belief the US cares about us.
It's simple pragmatism. Canada and Mexico are pretty tame nations to share a border with. But any nation silly enough to attempt an invasion of either dramatically raises the stakes for the US. It's all about American self-interests.
Simply having the US there is a deterrent for the rest of the world. We don't even require American defence, because it simply won't be necessary.
