If the US wanted our oil in that fashion, they would invade today, regardless of whether Alberta was a province or a nation. You think the mighty Canadian army is what is stopping them now?

So you're suggesting we separate from Canada, and then demand that the "new" Canada or the U.S. protect us? And what reason do they have to do this?
What are you going to do if there is national dissention? What are you going to do if we can't even keep our own people under control? And what are you going to do if there is a natural disaster and needs national guard-esque troops to help with the rescue efforts?
Your suggestion that the nation of Alberta shouldn't need any sort of national military presence is laughable at best. If I'm not mistaken, then we'd have to let the Calgary Police Service provide military prevention in the event of an emergency, considering that would be the next most ample "military" style resource.
