While the GST may be an efficient tax, lowering it from 7 to 5 was a good idea. It makes things simpler, it aids perception and while its easy to tax consumption, the economy relies heavily on people consuming.

The only way I would advocate a rise in GST is if its in concert with an elimination of income taxes. Like the "Fair Tax" proposal in the US. Even that has its dark side.
