They seem to have cleaned Vuze up since they rebranded from Azureus. It defaults to the "classic" interface, offers about a billion configuration options (which is both good and bad), and also allows for very tight controls on encryption and transmission functions. It also feels lighter, if that makes sense.
Overall, I'm very impressed with Vuze now. Never was very impressed with uTorrent or Transmission since they both seemed a bit unstable on my machines (uTorent in Vista, Tranmission on Mac). I use Vuze on both platforms now.

Ok, I need to combat you on the Java quip. Unless you're talking about comparing Java to C, it's performance is on par with anything in the Microsoft stack (.NET -- shudder). I know of no other language that is as effective at deploying software across multiple platforms as Java is -- assuming you avoid Spring like the plague. Really, the achillies heel of the language is the lack of a solid GUI library.
