Honestly though, there's so many charities out there these days, and large organizations (student associations are relatively well-heeled) are inundated with requests. Not every charity can be accommodated, unfortunately. Usually, it boils down to directing money towards things that benefit the most people. That's just the way it works, sadly.
The big flaw the Carleton students made was their lamebrain "excuse" caused a big kerfuffle. If they had just said "sorry, it doesn't effect enough people" they might have gotten away with it.
