Also, I think it might have been covered in another thread, but I couldn't find it: How have people's luck been with refurbs from the Apple online store?
I use my Touch as more of a PDA, with a very good iPod emulator built in

The ability to carry around a calendar, contact list, notepad, and other assorted utility type apps is great. I've used my Touch to do everything from temperature & weight conversions, to note taking, task lists, warranty look up on client equipment, network troubleshooting, reading reference manuals, etc.

The Touch has been described as "training wheels for the iPhone", and I can see why - having always on internet access would be a huge plus. Wifi isn't quite as ubiquitous and accessible as you will eventually want/require/desire. There have been a number of times I've looked at the Touch and thought "if only I had wifi right now", because I wanted to look something up or check an email.

I'm not a huge gamer on my Touch, but the games I have played are very well done. You will be spending money on most of the good ones, so factor that cost in too, when you look at the price of an iPod.

Apple refurb stuff is as close to risk free as you can get. Excellent, outstanding quality on the refurb stuff. I bought an AppleTV refurb, and you would be hard pressed to not know it is new.
