Reading the various accounts it seems this thing was visible from Red Deer to Fort Mac, and East to the Saskatchewan border. So it must have been big, and must have at least started off at a pretty decent altitude.

If only it had aimed a little lower. Then we wouldn't have to play the Oilers anymore.

Edit: Having read a bit more about it, apparently it was also visible in Manitoba. Which suggests that it was both enormous and at a very high altitude, that it didn't fizzle out but actually kept going a long way, or there was more than one of it.
